According to the National Weather Service’s website, “Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States, resulting in hundreds of
fatalities each year”. June 30 and July 1 of this year the temperatures reached 105 degrees, which is the highest recorded temperature in Knoxville to date. Access to free drinking water is a necessary measure to ensure the safety of the general public. This issue concerns the businesses operating in Market Square and the downtown area that either have to charge those in desperate need for water money for cups, or deny them water in debilitating heat. This dilemma needs to be eradicated and drinking water should be seen as a right, not a privilege to those who can afford it. This is not only a public health issue, but also a measure to promote sustainability in Knoxville. The EPA estimates that plastics constitute more than 12 percent of the municipal solid waste in the United States, the largest from plastic containers including water bottles. A public drinking fountain would enable people to carry their own containers and boost Knoxville’s image of a sustainable community.we are trying to get the ball rolling on this idea so visit our facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/events/347781525298825/
